Why Exclamation Marks Are Not Your Friend.

mhmmmm I should probably go proofread everything I’ve ever written!!!! lol

Message and Muse

Danger ahead. I’ll let you in on a little secret. One of the biggest giveaways that a client has written their own copy, without hiring a copywriter, is the over-use of exclamation marks.

The world’s most over-used punctuation mark has a lot to answer for. In a fraction of a second, it has the power to turn even the most delicately worded prose into a pantomime horse. It’s right up there with CAPS LOCK and alphanumeric truncation (h8ers gonna h8) for a spot in room 101. In the printing world, an exclamation mark is often referred to as a ‘screamer’, ‘gasper’, ‘bang’, ‘slammer’ or ‘startler’ – ie: something to be used sparingly, and for dramatic effect, where warranted. Over-use is tiring and annoying at best and shows lack of control. (Apple even has a specific section in their distributer rulebook about avoiding their use.) There’s even a word for excessive use of…

Merry Cyber Monday… Holidays what?

Are the holidays extra commercialized this year? Or am I just sensitive to the malls opening on Thanksgiving and cyber monday beginning on sunday. Is xmas going to be a week later so that theres more time to shop also? Ew. Over it.

Apparently the ads and hype are working as this years cyber monday sales were record breaking (and counting) according to the Chicago Tribune.  http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/technology/sns-rt-us-usa-retail-cybermonday-20131202,0,3419391.story

Baby, It’s Cold Outside (aka How to Survive Winter Running)

2princessesontherun

Well, it seems to be that time of year. Snow. Ice. Wind. Cold. You know – WINTER. In my opinion, it should be a 4-letter word. But whether you loathe it or love it, I’m sure we can all agree that it changes things for those of us out on the roads.

my gym winter

Don’t throw things at me for this truly anti-Canadian confession, but I am just not a fan of winter. And I am especially not a fan of winter now that I am a runner! I can no longer hole up, stay warm and wait for it to be over. I now have to embrace it, get out there and spend lots of quality time in the bitter invigorating temps.

Last weekend, Alana came to town to join me on my regular Sunday run. Once in a while, when one of us is looking for a little added motivation…

Post Thanksgiving

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! With so much to be thankful for there really should be several Thanksgivings per year! Due to a shorter shopping season it truly seemed like Black friday stole the spot light. I remember the says when only a handful of places were open on Thanksgiving…. this year my local mall was open at 8pm. I guess thats just enough time to eat and dash.

Or on the same day….

A Good Reason To Smile :D

I was inspired to write this post after my brother told me about a group he joined on campus called Project Hello Stranger. The group runs multiple events with the simple purpose of working towards a happier, more friendly campus. My brother was telling me the other day about an event run by Project Hello Stranger where he and his fellow members were handing out yellow balloons on which they had drawn all sorts of smiling faces. The point of this event? Simply to make strangers on campus smile.

After hearing about such an event I wanted to look into what some of the benefits of smiling are, and more specifically, if smiling has any affect on our productivity. I didn’t have to look very far to find that the simple act of smiling may be used to release powerful neurochemicals, and can in turn have a positive affect on…

No time to workout?

To make up for the napping and snacking

The Life of Lucky

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have been getting quite economical with my workouts lately. A couple of minutes here and there can really add up!

One of my favourite times to sneak in a little physical activity is first thing in the morning. Somedays, it’s as simple as a one-minute plank, other times I’ll work out for 10-15 minutes. I find that if I work out early in the morning, when I’m not fully awake, I can trick myself into doing it. By the time I’m finished working out, I’m awake and ready to start the day.

Here’s one of my favourite morning workouts, and it takes only 15 minutes to do:

An added bonus of doing this specific workout in the morning- your abs will (probably) look more defined than if you workout your core later in the day.

This routine is great anytime of…
